General Pilates Questions
Is Pilates Suitable for Beginners?
Yes. Both Reformer Pilates and Mat Pilates are suitable for beginners with different fitness levels and movement experience. Exercises can be modified according to your strength, mobility and confidence.
At Precision Pilates Studio, our instructors provide clear demonstrations, movement guidance and suitable variations. You do not need to be strong or flexible before attending your first Pilates class.
What Is the Difference Between Reformer Pilates and Mat Pilates?
Mat Pilates is performed on a mat and mainly uses your body weight to build core strength, stability and control. Small props may also be added to provide variety and challenge.
Reformer Pilates uses specialised equipment with a moving carriage, straps, pulleys and adjustable spring resistance. The Reformer can provide support for some movements while adding resistance to others.
Neither option is necessarily better. The right class depends on your preferences, experience and fitness goals. Many people enjoy combining both Reformer and Mat Pilates as part of a balanced movement routine.
What Should I Wear to a Pilates Class?
What Should I Wear to a Pilates Class?Wear comfortable, fitted activewear that allows you to move freely. Leggings or fitted exercise trousers with a comfortable top are suitable for both Reformer and Mat Pilates.
Avoid excessively loose clothing, as it may interfere with movement or make it difficult for your instructor to observe your alignment. Grip socks are recommended for Reformer Pilates to improve hygiene and stability.
How Often Should I Do Pilates?
For many people, attending Pilates two to three times per week provides a consistent routine for developing strength, mobility and movement control. However, even one class per week can be beneficial when practised consistently.
Your ideal frequency will depend on your experience, schedule, recovery and personal goals. Pilates can also be combined with walking, cardiovascular exercise or strength training as part of a balanced fitness routine.
You can also refer to the Singapore Physical Activity Guidelines by HealthHub for guidance on building a balanced and active lifestyle.
Do I Need to Be Flexible to Start Pilates?
No. You do not need to be flexible before starting Pilates. Many people begin Pilates specifically to improve their flexibility, mobility and overall quality of movement.
Your instructor can provide suitable variations so that you can work comfortably within your current range of movement. With regular practice, your flexibility and mobility may gradually improve.
Can Pilates Help with Back Pain?
Pilates can help develop core strength, postural awareness, mobility and movement control. These improvements may be beneficial for some people experiencing general back stiffness or discomfort.
However, Pilates is not a replacement for medical treatment. If you have chronic pain, a diagnosed injury or a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare professional before beginning a new exercise programme. Please also inform your instructor about any relevant conditions before class.
Can Pilates Help with Weight Loss?
Pilates can support weight management by building strength, improving movement quality and encouraging consistent physical activity. It may also help you develop greater body awareness and confidence in movement.
Results vary between individuals. Pilates is most effective for weight management when combined with balanced nutrition, cardiovascular activity, sufficient sleep and a sustainable healthy lifestyle.
Am I Too Old to Start Pilates?
Not at all. Adults can begin Pilates at many different ages. Exercises can be adapted according to your mobility, balance, strength and confidence.
Older adults or anyone returning to exercise after a long break may prefer to begin with a private session or beginner-friendly class. This allows the instructor to understand your needs and introduce the exercises gradually.
How Long Is a Pilates Class?
Most Reformer Pilates and Mat Pilates classes at Precision Pilates Studio are approximately 50 to 60 minutes long.
A typical session may include a warm-up, core exercises, upper-body and lower-body strengthening, mobility work and a short cool-down. Try to arrive a few minutes early for your first class so you have time to settle in.
Is Pilates Better Than Gym Workouts?
Pilates and gym workouts provide different benefits. Pilates generally focuses on core control, alignment, mobility, stability and precise movement. Gym workouts may place greater emphasis on heavier resistance training, cardiovascular fitness or muscle development.
Neither is automatically better. Many people combine Pilates with gym training to create a balanced fitness routine. The best option is one that supports your goals and that you can practise consistently.
Reformer Pilates Questions
A Pilates Reformer has a moving carriage, adjustable springs, straps, pulleys, a footbar and shoulder rests. The springs create different levels of resistance and can also provide support during certain exercises.
By adjusting the springs and body position, the Reformer can be used for a wide range of strengthening, stability and mobility exercises. Your instructor will set up the equipment and guide you through each movement.

Is Reformer Pilates Difficult for Beginners?
Reformer Pilates may feel unfamiliar during your first class, but beginners can learn the basic movements with proper instruction. The adjustable spring resistance allows exercises to be modified according to your strength, mobility and experience.
At Precision Pilates Studio, our small-group setting allows instructors to provide guidance while you become familiar with the carriage, springs, straps and footbar. You can progress gradually as your confidence and movement control improve.
Are Grip Socks Required for Reformer Pilates?
Grip socks are strongly recommended for Reformer Pilates. The non-slip grips underneath the socks can provide additional stability when using the carriage, footbar and standing platform.
They also help maintain hygiene when using shared studio equipment. If you do not own grip socks, contact Precision Pilates Studio before your class to check whether they are available for purchase.
Should I Choose Group or Private Reformer Pilates Classes?
Small-group Reformer Pilates classes are suitable if you enjoy exercising with others and are comfortable following a structured class programme. Our boutique class environment also allows instructors to provide guidance and suitable exercise variations.
Private Reformer Pilates provides more individual attention and allows the session to be tailored to your goals, experience and movement needs. A private session may be helpful if you are completely new to the Reformer, prefer one-to-one instruction or have specific movement considerations.
Mat Pilates Questions
Is Mat Pilates Suitable for Beginners?
Yes. Mat Pilates is suitable for beginners and does not require previous experience. Exercises use your body weight to develop core strength, stability, coordination and movement control.
Your instructor can provide easier or more challenging variations according to your ability. Small props may also be used to provide support, resistance or variety during the class.
Do I Need to Bring My Own Mat?
Mats are available for use at Precision Pilates Studio, so you do not need to bring your own. However, you are welcome to bring a personal exercise mat if you prefer.
Wear comfortable activewear and arrive a few minutes before your first Mat Pilates class so you have time to prepare and settle into the studio.
Can Mat Pilates Be as Effective as Reformer Pilates?
Yes. Mat Pilates can be highly effective for developing core strength, balance, coordination, flexibility and body awareness. Because there is less equipment support, many Mat Pilates exercises require you to control your body using your own strength.
Reformer Pilates offers adjustable spring resistance and a wider variety of supported movements. Both methods provide valuable benefits, and the better choice depends on your goals, preferences and experience.
